Soil Health Extension Specialist
Organic Agriculture Program – Oregon State University Extension
We advance soil health through research, on-farm trials, and hands-on education so producers, land stewards, and communities across Oregon can grow and manage thriving, resilient soils.

Extension research for thriving soils
Led by Dr. Shannon Cappellazzi, the Soil Health Extension Specialist Oregon (SHES-OR) Lab focuses on how we can utilize and support biological systems to enhance soils’ capacity to function, providing positive economic, agronomic, and societal benefits.
Part of our work includes the development of the Oregon Soil Health Map below, if you wish to learn more about our past and ongoing work visit ‘Our Work’ page.
Soil Health Map
This interactive map was developed by our team as part of an ongoing effort to build a comprehensive soil health database for Oregon and beyond. By contributing to the creation of standardized, statewide and national benchmarks, we aim to bring together consistent, research-based information that supports producers and communities in understanding and improving local soil health. This map was made possible through the contributions of several trusted data sources. Soil texture and drainage data were sourced from the Soil Survey Staff, NRCS, USDA, Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) Database. Ecoregion boundaries were provided by Oregon GeoHub (Oregon Ecoregions, oregon-geo). Location data displayed in this map uses anonymized address points provided by Oregon GeoHub (Oregon Address Points, oregon-geo). We are grateful to these organizations for making their data publicly accessible in support of research, education, and resource management.
